Vice-President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdul Hakim Bashar, welcomed the statements of the Chair of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria Paulo Pinheiro who expressed support for the formation of an independent UN mechanism for disclosing the fate of the missing in the country.
Bashar stressed the need for the United Nations to work seriously for the release of detainees and the disclosure of the fate of the forcibly disappeared. He pointed out that this issue represents a source of concern for every Syrian family and causes them great pain as they have been waiting for many years without knowing any information about their loved ones.
Bashar also stressed the need for the new mechanism to be fruitful by supporting and providing it with effective tools to carry out its tasks. He also said this mechanism mut not be like the international mechanism to hold accountable those responsible for committing crimes in Syria, which is yet to yield concrete results.
