Member of the political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Jihad Marie, emphasized that the Assad regime continues to obstruct any semblance of stability in liberated areas, persistently targeting civilian and vital infrastructure to disrupt life therein.
In a press statement, Marie highlighted that the regime’s ongoing atrocities against civilians over the past 13 years stand as the primary catalyst for the humanitarian crisis in Syria. These relentless assaults have exacerbated humanitarian needs and perpetuated the refugee and displacement crisis.
Marie underscored the prolonged international indifference toward these crimes as a contributing factor to the crisis’s endurance, condemning it as a stain on the collective conscience of the international community. He urged for the strict enforcement of UN resolutions regarding Syria and the compelling of the Assad regime to cease its indiscriminate targeting of civilians and be held accountable for its actions.
The Syrian Civil Defense reported renewed bombardment by Assad regime and Russian forces on liberated areas in recent days. They cited an incident on Sunday where a child was killed and his mother seriously injured due to artillery shelling by regime forces on residential neighborhoods in the town of Abzimo, western countryside of Aleppo. The attacks also inflicted significant material damage to civilian homes.
Another civilian was killed in the village of Al-Ghouz, west of the town of Al-Bab in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, on Saturday. The incident occurred due to artillery shelling originating from areas jointly controlled by regime forces and the PYD terrorist militia.
According to the Civil Defense, the highest number of attacks and casualties in liberated areas occurred in January, with 93 attacks resulting in 10 civilian fatalities and 50 injuries. March followed closely with 92 attacks, causing 10 fatalities and 25 civilian injuries. February ranked third with 85 attacks, resulting in 3 fatalities and 24 injuries. April saw a decrease in attacks, totaling 67, leading to 4 civilian deaths and 31 injuries.
