Member of the political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Zuhair Muhammad, said that the Assad regime and its allies are deliberately destroying educational facilities in Syria in order to turn the country into a hotbed of ignorance and darkness.
Speaking on the occasion of the International Day of Education, Mohammed called on donor countries to step up support in this field with the aim of rehabilitating schools and infrastructure that were destroyed by the regime and its allies and improving the educational reality to ensure the return of hundreds of thousands of children to their schools.
Rights reports indicated that the attacks of the regime and its allies led to partial or total damage to more than 40 percent of the total number of schools in Syria, while the Syrian Civil Defense indicated that the Assad regime and Russia destroyed thousands of schools in Syria with systematic attacks.
The Civil Defense said that since 2019 it has responded to more than 140 attacks by the regime forces and its Russian ally on schools and educational facilities in northwestern Syria.
