The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) has reported that it documented the tragic deaths of 30,034 children in Syria since March 2011, with 198 of them falling victim to torture. The organization warns that reestablishing relations with the Assad regime would further jeopardize the lives of countless Syrian children, exposing them to continued aggression.
On the occasion of the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, the SNHR released a press statement highlighting the alarming statistics. Out of the total child casualties, 22,982 lost their lives at the hands of the Assad regime forces, 2,048 were killed by Russian forces, and 958 fell victim to ISIS. Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham was responsible for the deaths of 74 children, while the PYD militia claimed the lives of 253. The International anti-ISIS Coalition forces were responsible for 926 child casualties, and an additional 2,793 children lost their lives due to actions by other parties.
The monitoring group also compiled a list of 5,204 children who are still detained in Syria. Of these, 3,693 are being held by the Assad regime, 319 by ISIS, 46 by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, 782 by the PYD militia, and 364 by other factions.
The SNHR further revealed that at least 198 children have tragically died as a result of torture since March 2011. Among them, 190 were victims of the Assad regime, one child suffered at the hands of ISIS, while two children each lost their lives due to actions by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and the PYD militia.
The SNHR emphasized that the Assad regime has been responsible for the most brutal forms of aggression against children in Syria, remaining undeterred despite Syria’s ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1993. (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
