The Syrian National Olympic Committee launched a football tournament under the title “Syrian Revolution Cup” in the Turkish province of Gaziantep.
The opening match in the tournament, which will last for four weeks, is scheduled on Sunday. A total of 16 teams from the southern provinces will compete in the tournament under the knockout rule.
Organizers of the tournament are taking precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The tournament coincides with the fifth anniversary of the Russian aggression against Syria which has so far caused the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of millions more.
The SOC’s Coordinator of the Syndicates and Union Office, Abdul Majid Barakat, said that the Syrian people have proved to the world their ability to succeed and prosper in all areas, including sports. He added that the Syrian people love life and deserve to live in a country that respects their dignity and appreciates their capabilities.
Barakat pointed out that the tournament carries hopes for salvation from the nefarious Russian occupation.
Head of the Syrian National Olympic Committee, Ahmed Al-Ali, said that the tournament is a message to the world that the Syrian people love life and still commit to demands and goals of the Syrian revolution.
“We still have a strong will as we are sparing no effort to make peace and achieve the demands of the Syrian people for freedom and dignity. The Syrian people are yearning to return to their country and the stadiums and sports facilities that the Assad regime has turned into military barracks.” (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
