On the second anniversary of the tragic attack on Dar Al-Shifa hospital in Afrin, which resulted in the loss of 15 innocent lives and left dozens wounded, Azad Othman, a member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), emphasized the importance of safeguarding civilians from artillery and rocket attacks. Othman highlighted that ensuring the protection of civilians is a crucial step towards fostering safety, reassurance, and sustainable stability in the liberated areas.
Othman stated that holding accountable those who pose a threat to the lives of civilians, along with the international community’s affirmation that those targeting residential neighborhoods will face consequences, will contribute significantly to the promotion of security and stability.
Moreover, Othman pointed out that the persistent fear of potential attacks hinders the progress of development projects. The constant sense of danger discourages investors from allocating capital to the liberated areas, as they fear the destruction of their projects through bombings.
Two years ago, Afrin town fell victim to terrorist rocket attacks originating from regions under the control of Assad regime forces and the PYD militia. These attacks specifically targeted residential neighborhoods and the Dar Al-Shifa hospital. The consequences were devastating, resulting in the loss of over 15 innocent lives, including two medical personnel and two humanitarian workers. Additionally, 43 civilians were wounded, among them 11 medical personnel and three Syrian Civil Defense volunteers.
