The political committee met with representatives of “Friends of the Syrian People” group to discuss the UN Security Council’s plan put forward by the UN envoy’s to Syria Staffan de Mistura. The meeting included representatives from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Turkey, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain.
Political committee members questioned de Mistura’s plan, specifically representation for “work group” meetings and the selection of the groups’ members. They stressed that these groups must reflect true representation of the Syrian people, expressing refusal to pre-defined interpretations of the Geneva I communique. They also stressed that these interpretations must be in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the Geneva II resolutions, particularly regarding the transitional period and the transitional governing body.
Political committee members also stressed the need to fully implement the Geneva I communique in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolution 2118, calling on the international community, to assume their responsibilities to stop Assad’s crimes against the Syrian people, to address the core of the Syrian tragedy, and to support the demands of the Syrian people for achieving a radical and comprehensive political transition without the presence of Bashar al-Assad and his inner circle in the transitional period and beyond.
