Member of the political committee in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Muhammad Qaddah, has asserted that the Assad regime continues its brutal treatment of civilians in Syria, with ongoing violations reported in the Dara’a province in the southern region of the country.
Commenting on the recent incident involving the storming of the town of Mahjah in the Daraa countryside by Assad’s forces, Qaddah stated, “The Assad regime persists in its well-known pattern of behavior. It disregards agreements, understandings, and treaties, opting instead for repression, arrests, and bombardments against its former or current opponents.”
On Thursday, Assad’s forces made an attempt to enter the town of Mahjah in the northern countryside of Daraa, citing the presence of wanted individuals as justification. They deployed anti-aircraft guns, tanks, and heavy gunfire, causing fear among civilians. However, the townspeople and local youths successfully resisted the incursion, preventing Assad’s forces from entering the town and safeguarding its residents from potential arrests and disappearances.
The attempted storming of the town received support from Russian forces, but the operation failed. Tensions remain high in the region following casualties among Assad regime forces during the confrontation, as the townspeople staunchly opposed the incursion.
