Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Haytham Rahmeh, has expressed his appreciation for the recent positions taken by the European Union and the United States. Both entities have recently emphasized the importance of implementing UN Resolution 2254 in Syria and rejecting any form of normalization with the criminal Assad regime.
Rahmeh commended Germany’s decision to cancel a conference between the European Union and the Arab League due to the participation of an Assad regime minister. He viewed this as a positive response by the Union, deserving gratitude from the Syrian people who eagerly anticipate the realization of their aspirations through a political transition in the country.
Highlighting the European Union’s policy towards Syria and the renewed stance of the US State Department, which prioritizes adherence to UN Resolution 2254, Rahmeh described them as guiding principles for a political solution and an end to the Syrian tragedy. He emphasized the importance of translating these declared positions into concrete actions that facilitate tangible progress in the political process in Syria.
Rahmeh emphasized the readiness of the institutions representing the Syrian revolution and opposition forces to actively engage with the political process. However, he pointed out that the Assad regime continues to rely on evasion and military tactics to circumvent meaningful political discussions. He stressed the need for major actors in Syria to adopt a resolute stance, imposing more punitive measures against regime figures, isolating and expelling it from international organizations, and holding it accountable for the war crimes committed over the past twelve years.
Rahmeh also underscored the urgency of addressing the Assad regime’s transformation of its areas of control into hubs for drug manufacturing and distribution, particularly Captagon.
