Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Haytham Rahmeh, commended the Arab efforts led by Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar to prevent the readmission of the Assad regime to the Arab League. He stressed the need to hand over Syria’s seat in the Arab League to the SOC as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, and to invite the SOC to participate in the League’s departments and committees.
Rahmeh stressed the importance of continuing to isolate the Assad regime politically and economically, given that the reasons that led to its isolation, including crimes, killings and destruction, are still there.
Rahmeh stressed that attempts to re-habilitate the Assad regime or normalize relations with it will be doomed to fail, and will only be met with the treachery and betrayal of the regime, which has become one of Iran’s tools in the region and cannot be separated from its malicious project.
He renewed his gratitude to the Arab countries that host Syrian refugees and support the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom, dignity and democracy. He called for the upcoming summit to discuss Syria in a way that serves the interests of the Syrian people and Arab countries, adding that these interests cannot be shared with the criminal Assad regime which is subordinate to the Iranian regime and serves its interests.
Rahmeh called on all Arab states to support reaching a comprehensive political transition in Syria in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254, wishing them success at their summit working for the interest of the Arab peoples and the prosperity of their countries.
