Following the fall of the regime and Bashar al-Assad’s escape to Russia, the revolution forces have begun freeing detainees from all Syrian prisons, including the infamous Sednaya Prison in the Damascus countryside. This has allowed them to reunite with their families and loved ones and embark on a new life free from tyranny.
Videos circulating on social media have captured scenes of detainees being released, particularly women and children, amidst emotions of shock and joy. Other footage reveals the dire conditions inside the prisons, including tools of execution and torture.
Footage from Sednaya Prison also displayed a surveillance room containing monitors tracking prisoners around the clock through a series of control room screens.
Sednaya is considered one of the most secretive places in the world, with its name long instilling fear in the hearts of Syrians. The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) has called on friendly and allied nations, especially Türkiye and the United States, to intervene urgently to aid detainees trapped in Sednaya Prison. The SOC also urged investigations into possible secret chambers within the prison and other clandestine detention facilities across Damascus, where thousands of detainees might be held.
The SOC noted that civil defense teams continue their search efforts but require additional support, including experts and equipment, warning that time is running out and the lives of thousands of detainees are at risk.
The SOC emphasized that the criminal regime abandoned detainees to face death as an act of revenge against the revolution and a continuation of its crimes even after fleeing the country.
Sednaya Prison was established in the 1980s, and Amnesty International described it years ago as a “human slaughterhouse,” a prison where “the Syrian state quietly slaughters its people.”
