The Syrian Network for Human Rights has warned that providing aid through the Assad regime risks inadvertently funding terrorism and atrocities committed against the Syrian population. In a report released on Wednesday, the Network found that the regime is stealing nearly 90% of the humanitarian aid intended for earthquake victims from supportive organizations and countries.
The monitoring group recorded the deaths of 7,259 Syrians, including approximately 2,153 children and 1,524 women, due to the earthquake and the delay in international aid between February 6 and 27, 2023. Among the victims were 73 medical personnel, 5 media workers, 62 humanitarian workers, and 4 civil defense volunteers in northwestern Syria.
The report stressed the urgent need to increase humanitarian aid for the families of victims and the displaced, particularly in northwestern Syria. The Network emphasized that humanitarian aid should not be used as a tool to support a regime involved in crimes against humanity.
The report called on the United Nations and donor countries to establish an international support platform to coordinate aid in northwestern Syria. The Network also called for an increase in the size and quality of aid provided to credible and independent Syrian relief organizations, with a focus on the needs of women and children, especially shelter.
