The Emergency Response Coordinators team said that the UN humanitarian aid being provided to the Syrian people, which Russia insists on sending through the Assad regime, is being sold on public roads and markets in the regime-held areas.
The Team said that while hundreds of thousands of families in northwest Syria suffer from a lack of humanitarian aid under the pretext of reducing support and funding, food baskets are being sold in the regime areas, amid a complete absence of what the United Nations calls the principles of humanitarian action, most notably neutrality and impartiality.
The Team said that the UN agencies are still providing support to the Assad regime through its affiliated organizations, most notably the Syrian Arab Red Crescent amid total lack of effective oversight by donors and agencies over the organization’s work mechanism in the regime’s areas.
The Team stated that the mandate given under UN Resolution 2585 (2021) for the cross-border delivery of humanitarian aid will expire after a few days, wondering whether the UN Security Council, the United Nations and international agencies will work to continue the delivery of aid to those in real need, or if the humanitarian issue will remain hostage to Russian blackmail and warlords.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition earlier stressed the need to deliver humanitarian aid to those in need by extending the authorization for the cross-border delivery of humanitarian aid. It stressed that humanitarian aid must not be sent through the Assad regime because it is using it to support the militias that it has used to kill Syrians, in addition to practicing political and humanitarian blackmail if the aid comes through it.
