The Syrian Coalition strongly condemns the flight the Russian air force’s targeting of archaeological sites in the town of Serjila in rural in Idlib on Sunday. Serjila is one of Syria best preserved dead cities and dates back to the Syriac era, circa 1st century AD.
The Syrian Coalition stated that the site targeted by the Russian air raids is void of any ISIS elements. The bombardment caused severe damage to the site.
The destruction of Syrian civilization and the obliteration of its historical landmarks is no longer limited to the Assad regime, who has destroyed so far over 260 archaeological sites or to ISIS which demolished many historical sites in Syria, most notably in Palmyra. Russian fighter jets are using cluster munitions and fragmentation bombs, known for powerful destructive effects, to hit civilian areas and historical sites.
The Syrian Coalition urges the UNESCO and regional organizations to condemn Russia’s aggressive behavior in Syria, calling for taking urgent action to document these crimes and protect Syria’s historical and archaeological sites against any attempt to destroy them. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
