Fayez Sarah, Political committee member, stated today that the congruent statements released by Russia, Iran and the Assad regime are “a political symphony aimed at affecting public opinion and dissuading the opposition from going to Geneva II.” These statements, Sarah adds, seek to “persuade the external and internal sides into departing from Geneva I Communique, which is the basis on which Geneva II must be built upon. Sarah’s remarks came in response to statements made by the regime’s Prime Minister Wael Halaki that “going to Geneva II does not mean the handover of power.” Halaki echoed Russian and Iranian statements that “fighting terrorism must be a top priority at Geneva II.” Sarah went on: “There is a consensus on combatting terrorism. However, the problem with Iran and Russia is that they are unwilling to identify the real terrorist, represented by Bashar al-Assad and his mafia regime.” Sarah also said that Russia’s and Iran’s reiteration of their support of a political solution “is going against their actual acts that support terrorism.” Sarah stresses that Russia, Iran and Hezbollah “support a political solution in thought but not in deed,” persisting that “the Russians would not have supplied Assad with weapons and ammunition if they had been truthful about fighting terrorism.” Sara concluded his statement by stressing that “all facts on the ground indicate that the Russians do not want a political solution.” (Source: Syrian Coalition)
