The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) has documented the deaths of 42 civilians in Syria during May 2023. The victims included seven children, one woman, and one person who died under torture. One attack alone claimed the lives of seven civilians, including five children and a woman, the Network said in its latest monthly report,
Daraa province had the highest number of casualties, accounting for approximately 48% of the documented deaths in May. As-Suwayda followed with around 17%, while Aleppo and Deir Ezzor provinces each contributed 12% to the death toll for the month.
The report highlights the ongoing threat of civilian casualties due to landmines across various areas in Syria. In May, the report documented the deaths of six civilians, bringing the total death toll from landmines since the beginning of 2023 to 83, including 16 children and seven women.
The report strongly emphasized the urgent need for the Assad regime to cease its indiscriminate bombings and targeting of residential areas, hospitals, schools, and markets. It also called for an end to the torture that has claimed the lives of thousands of Syrian citizens in detention centers. The report further urged the regime to comply with UN Security Council resolutions and customary humanitarian law.
Additionally, the rights group called upon the UN Security Council to take further action following the issuance of UN Resolution 2254. It stressed the necessity of referring Syria to the International Criminal Court and holding all those involved in crimes against humanity and war crimes accountable.
