President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, warmly welcomed the remarks made by the French Foreign Minister, Catherine Colonna, who asserted that Bashar al-Assad should face trial for the “hundreds of thousands of deaths” and the use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people. Al-Meslet commended France for its unwavering and principled stance in combating these crimes, emphasizing that preventing impunity aligns with the core values of French diplomacy.
Furthermore, Al-Meslet underscored the vital importance of the continued rejection, by France and Europe, of any efforts towards reconstruction, normalization, or the lifting of sanctions on the Assad regime. He insisted that such actions should only be considered once a comprehensive political transition has taken place within the country.
Al-Meslet passionately called for prompt and effective international action to hold war criminals in Syria accountable, with Bashar Al-Assad at the forefront. He also urged ongoing support for the Syrian people and their political forces in their pursuit of ending the suffering caused by the criminality of the Al-Assad regime and its allies.
