Secretary of the Political Committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdelbaset Abdullatif, has strongly condemned the ongoing atrocities perpetrated by the Assad regime and its allies against civilians in Syria. Abdullatif expressed his condemnation in response to a recent incident where Assad’s forces, in collaboration with Russia, committed a new crime on Monday against civilians and a displaced family in the Idlib countryside.
According to the Syrian Civil Defense, Russian jets targeted a house near the town of Armanaz, west of Idlib, on Monday. This resulted in the tragic loss of an entire family that had been displaced from the southern Idlib countryside, including a man, his wife, and three of their children. Another child, the sole survivor of the attack, sustained injuries.
This deadly attack occurred shortly after a separate incident in which a civilian was killed, and five others, including three children, were injured. These casualties were the outcome of rocket strikes by regime forces targeting civilian homes, a school, public facilities, and the outskirts of the town of Sarmin in the eastern countryside of Idlib.
The eastern and southern countryside of Idlib has been consistently subjected to systematic bombing by regime forces, destabilizing the region and instilling a sense of terror and fear, leading to waves of displacement. Abdullatif emphasized that these brutal crimes are taking place at a time when the world is yearning for peace on New Year’s Day.
Abdullatif further highlighted the alarming consequences of continued international silence and the insufficient attention given to the Syrian crisis by the international community. He stressed that such neglect increases the peril for Syrians, undermines the security and stability of the region, and foreshadows potential new displacement and refugee crises amidst the tragic circumstances faced by the Syrian population.
