The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) said it is proud to acknowledge the Syrian people’s courage and resilience in pursuing their goals, as it commemorated the twelfth anniversary of the Syrian Revolution. It said that since the first shouts of protest in 2011, the Syrian people’s demands for the overthrow of the regime, accountability, and the establishment of a free, dignified, and just state have not wavered.
“While we celebrate this anniversary, we must acknowledge that the international community is still failing to hold the Assad regime accountable for its crimes,” the SOC said in a press release issued on Friday.
“Despite political commitments and UN resolutions calling for a political transition in Syria, the regime continues to use chemical weapons, barrel bombs, and other means to kill, displace, and imprison millions of Syrians. It is unconscionable that the regime remains in power without any real effort to hold it accountable.”
The SOC called on friendly nations to review the history and behavior of the Assad regime, which has committed the same crimes since 2011. “The regime’s brutal methods seek to quell the revolution and silence the calls for freedom. Inaction from the international community only worsens the suffering of the Syrian people.”
The SOC emphasized it is ready to engage in any political process that will bring safety to Syria and fulfill the aspirations of its people. “However, as the Assad regime continues to obstruct international efforts, we demand that it not be granted any platform in the United Nations or any other international forums. The regime uses these platforms to spread falsehoods and lies and seeks to rehabilitate itself through deception. It does not represent the Syrian people and is merely a tool in the hands of Russia and Iran, serving their interests in the region.”
