Basel Ghunaim, a member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), said that regional and international agreements concerning Daraa have been the primary cause of instability in the southern region, forcing its residents to flee daily in search of safety for themselves and their children.
Ghunaim emphasized that the Assad regime has exploited the regional and international situation to punish the people of Daraa, resuming campaigns of assassinations, executions, and arrests targeting civilians and opposition fighters.
He reiterated that Syria cannot be deemed safe as long as the Assad regime, its backers, and sectarian terrorist militias remain in power. Ghunaim called for activating the political process and implementing UN resolutions on Syria, particularly the Geneva Communiqué of 2012 and UN Security Council Resolutions 2118 and 2254.
Meanwhile, the Ahrar Horan local activist group reported that a boat carrying around 25 migrants, all Syrians, sank off the Libyan coast on Wednesday, approximately two hours after departing from Tripoli.
The group noted that most of the passengers were from the town of Al-Karak Al-Sharqi in Daraa’s countryside, including women and children. While some were rescued by fishermen, others remain missing.
