The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) stressed the importance of the Arab role in ending the tragedy in Syria by adopting a unified position that guarantees the resolution of the Syrian conflict in favor of the Syrian people so that they can return to the Arab fold as well as confront the regional challenges along with their brothers.
In a press release issued on Friday, the SOC stressed that the security of Syria and its neighboring countries cannot be ensured as long as the Assad regime and its allies remain in Syria.
“The Assad regime has nothing to offer to Syria but killings, destruction, mass displacement, foreign militias and occupations. It has exported nothing but crises, illicit drugs and terrorism to the countries of the region.”
The SOC made it clear that the Assad regime is nothing but a puppet in the hands of the Iranian regime. Its survival in power will definitely mean increased influence of the Iranian militias and the growing threat of Iranian expansionism in the neighboring countries and the rest of the region.
“Moreover, any bet on distancing Assad from Iran will be certainly lost as the relationship between the two regimes is an organic one. This relationship is intricately intertwined in view of the Iranian dominant influence in the regime-held areas, the Assad regime’s internal structure, the Iranian regime’s sending of sectarian militias to shore up the Assad regime, and the political, financial support Iran is giving to Assad.”
The SOC stressed that ensuring regional security hinges on achieving a political transition in Syria in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. Such solution should guarantee the overthrow of the Assad regime, the withdrawal of foreign militias from the country, and the handing over of power to the Syrian people, who have been struggling for eleven years to regain their freedom and realize their dream of building a free, independent state.
