The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) welcomed the US House of Representatives’ resolution opposing normalization with the Assad regime, reaffirming the continuation of sanctions against it, and establishing an oversight mechanism to ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need. The resolution also denounces the Assad regime’s exploitation of the earthquake disaster to evade justice and renews commitment to the Caesar Act.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the SOC called for ratifying the resolution and implement it as soon as possible. The resolution is a critical step towards preventing normalization with the regime, and the SOC hopes it will have a meaningful impact. This resolution is essential to the Syrian people as they approach the 12th anniversary of the Syrian revolution and continue to struggle.
The SOC called upon the international community to unite their efforts to ensure that the Assad regime faces punishment for its brutal crimes committed with its allies against the Syrian people since 2011, including the use of chemical weapons and barrel bombs.
The SOC emphasized the need for effective pressure on the regime, including expelling it from all international forums and maintaining international isolation to implement UN resolutions on political transition, especially Resolution 2254.
