The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Al-Jazira and Euphrates Committee held a new meeting to discuss the humanitarian and social conditions in the areas east of the Euphrates and the need to ensure the active participation of the local population.
The meeting brought together the Committee’s Coordinator, Abdelbaset Abdullatif, members Abdulahad Astepho, Abdul Majid Barakat, Muhammad Ali Issa, Abdullah Al-Faraj, Ahmed Tomeh, Yasser Al-Farhan, Zuhair Al-Muhammed, Muhammad Wali and Hussein Al-Abdullah.
Participants put forth a set of recommendations for ensuring the security and stability of the region, as well as the unity of the Syrian people and the integrity of the Syrian territory.
Participants stressed the need to pay more attention to the humanitarian, political and societal dimensions in the eastern Euphrates region, and to consolidate the SOC’s goals in implementing its national vision in the liberated areas.
Moreover, participants called for strengthening the SOC’s actual presence in the region by opening offices in Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ayn, strengthening relations with the people of the region and civil society organizations, and launching an inclusive national dialogue.
They also stressed the importance of strengthening and highlighting the active role of all components of the region, especially those represented in the SOC.
They pointed to the need for the Syrian Interim Government to participate in the work of the Committee by nominating representatives to the Committee, communicating with the commanders of the Syrian National Army units in the region, and coordinating with them and providing the necessary support to the Committee.
They stressed the need to develop the necessary plans to strengthen and ensure popular representation, implement administrative decentralization and standards of good governance in accordance with UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions on Syria.
Participants strongly condemned the crimes that the PKK and PYD terrorist organizations are committing against the people of the region. They denounced the targeting of civilians in the Ghweiran neighborhood in Al-Hasaka and the destruction of civilians property under the pretext of fighting ISIS.
