Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) member Abdul Malik Abboud met with representatives of the Afrin Youth Revolutionaries Conglomerate and the Afrin Students Union in the town of Basouta, located in the countryside of Afrin. The meeting focused on discussing the political situation in Syria and exploring ways to cooperate with official institutions to improve the living conditions in the region.
Abboud provided an overview of the latest political developments and the positions of the SOC and the Syrian Negotiations Commission regarding the diverse international stances towards Syria. He reaffirmed the SOC’s commitment to the goals of the Syrian revolution and the aspirations of the Syrian people to regain freedom and justice, combat the criminal Assad regime, and liberate the country from terrorist organizations.
Abboud also emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity among all components of the Syrian people in the fight against the PYD terrorist organization, the preservation of Syrian territorial integrity, and the social fabric, while preventing attempts to exploit the Kurdish population, which remains an integral part of this fabric.
The discussion also centered on enhancing communication and coordination between Kurdish representatives and all institutions, particularly the Syrian National Army, which aims to empower the local population to manage their own affairs effectively. This, in turn, would encourage the return of displaced residents to their homes and villages.
Additionally, they explored ways to improve services and the economic situation in the region, particularly in the agricultural sector, which is vital to a large segment of Kurds living in Afrin. The possibility of providing incentives for businesspeople to revive industrial facilities in the area was also discussed. Abboud expressed his support for these demands and pledged to work with official institutions to take practical steps that would benefit the people.
The meeting also addressed the reform efforts carried out by the Syrian National Army in the Afrin region, which aim to improve the situation by holding accountable leaders and individuals who have mistreated Kurdish residents. Abboud stressed the importance of regularly monitoring the situation to prevent further violations.
The spread of drugs, now one of the greatest threats to all liberated areas, was another key topic of discussion. Abboud emphasized the need to combat this issue through the relevant authorities to protect the youth of the region. He detailed the efforts of the Syrian National Army, in collaboration with security forces, to combat drug trafficking, promotion, and abuse, highlighting several operations undertaken in this regard.
Abboud also underscored the importance of university education, given the region’s need for academics who can contribute to its governance. He mentioned a broad initiative aimed at supporting youth and university students by providing financial aid, covering university fees, and ensuring necessary services. Additionally, he discussed efforts to liaise with security authorities to facilitate students’ movements and provide them with full protection against violations during their commutes.
