Member of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee, Basma Muhammed, said that Syrian refugees are being exploited by some right-wing political parties around the world with the aim of achieving political gains, which further fuels incitement and hate speech against Syrian refugees.
In remarks marking the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, Muhammad stressed that Syrian refugees are victims of the growing hostility by parties that are trying to exploit the political reality in Syria. She also said that the issue of refugees is being exploited for score-settling by political parties competing for power, in addition to the electoral programs of some politicians.
She pointed out that Syrian refugees have never been an economic, educational or social burden on the host communities. She cited the large number of competent refugees who are providing outstanding services to the host countries, in addition the refugees’ major role in supporting the economy through their work and the opening of small, medium and large investment projects.
Muhammad stressed that Syrian refugees were forced to leave their country to escape injustice and death. She also stressed that Syrian refugees did not give up their cause by fleeing their homeland because the confrontation between a defenseless people and a ruthless killing machine is unequal.
She called on governments and peoples to renounce hate speech and racism that is fueled by political differences because it undermines the sublime values that Syrians were optimistic about when they left their country in search of safety for themselves and their families.
