Basma Muhammad, a member of the political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), has attributed the sudden collapse of buildings in certain southern Damascus neighborhoods to the Assad regime’s responsibility. She asserted that the regime’s indiscriminate bombing in various areas led to the demolition and destruction of these structures.
Muhammad highlighted that regime forces have been targeting civilian and vital areas with heavy and indiscriminate weapons for the past 12 years, rendering a significant number of buildings uninhabitable and on the brink of collapse. She pointed out that many families who returned to their homes now reside in semi-destroyed and precarious structures due to their financial inability to secure housing in safer locations.
Moreover, Muhammad pointed out that the regime has allowed corruption to proliferate, permitting associated traders to construct housing that violates architectural conditions and standards.
Local media reported that an illicit 6-storey building collapsed in the Al-Tadamon neighborhood, south of Damascus, on Monday, resulting in casualties among the residents and construction workers. Efforts are ongoing in the area to rescue those trapped under the rubble.
