The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) urgently appealed to the UN Secretary-General, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, as well as human rights organizations and associations, to intervene immediately in order to rescue over 50 Syrian asylum seekers currently stranded on an island in the Evros River in Greece. These individuals are on the brink of losing their lives due to depleting food supplies and the spread of serious diseases caused by consuming contaminated water.
The SOC called upon the concerned organizations to take swift action. Additionally, we implore the international community to exert pressure on the Greek authorities, urging them to take prompt measures. Immediate provision of essential food and medical assistance is imperative to avert an impending catastrophe and prevent the untimely deaths of these vulnerable asylum seekers.
The SOC placed full responsibility upon the Greek government for the safety and well-being of these asylum seekers. It condemned the violations that have been inflicted upon them, particularly the dire circumstances faced by the group stranded on an island in the Evros River. This group, comprised of children, women, and the infirm, has been subjected to deteriorating conditions, being left without sustenance or clean water.
