The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Strategic Studies and Consulting Working Group, together with the Political Parties and Movements Working Group, is holding on Friday a workshop titled “The Extension of Israeli Occupation Aggression to Lebanon and Iran’s Proxy Wars: Impacts on Syria.” The workshop brings together representatives from national political parties, political groups, and research and study centers.
The workshop will explore several key topics, including the feasibility of ending Iran’s influence and dominance in the region, specifically its control over Syria and the harm it poses to the Syrian revolution. It will also examine opportunities arising from current events that could help achieve the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom, dignity, and democracy. Additional discussions will focus on the potential for the fall of the Assad regime, or the possibility of changing its behavior and engaging seriously in a UN-sponsored political process, as well as the role of future regional and international actors.
Several critical questions will also be addressed, including whether a decision has been made to end Iran’s influence in the region or if military operations are aimed at merely limiting and reconfiguring it to serve Israeli occupation policy goals. Other questions include whether the conflict will remain contained to Gaza and Lebanon or expand to other countries, whether the aim is to dismantle Hezbollah militarily or simply weaken it while maintaining its political role in Lebanon, and whether the outcome of the U.S. elections will influence the American stance on ending Iranian influence in the region.
