The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) launched an online campaign under the title “Nine Years Without Accountability” to demand accountability for the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons in eastern Ghouta on August 21, 2013. The attack claimed the lives of more than 1,400 people, many of whom were children and women.
Launched ahead of the ninth anniversary of the massacre, the campaign aims to remind the world of the horrible massacre and its victims, as well as the heinous crimes of the Assad regime against civilians in Syria. It also demands accountability for those responsible for this crime, especially since the findings of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria – in its report issued in February 2021 – confirmed the Assad regime’s responsibility for the use of chemical weapons 32 times in different regions across Syria.
The campaign stresses the SOC’s determination to demand that international community continue isolating the Assad regime and prevent any attempt to normalize relations with it or rehabilitate it.
