The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) expressed its full support for a UN General Assembly resolution that would mandate the assembly convene whenever a permanent Security Council member exercises its veto power. Liechtenstein submitted the draft resolution on behalf of 38 cosponsors.
President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, on Tuesday said that disrupting the Security Council should no longer be met with silence, adding that the mechanisms of work of the Council, which bears the responsibility to maintain international peace and security, must be corrected.
Al-Meslet pointed out that Russia has obstructed the UN Security Council for several years by using its veto power 16 times to shield the Assad regime from accountability for the mass war crimes it is committing against the Syrian people. He said that the Assad regime is responsible for the deaths of about one million Syrian civilians, the destruction of the country’s infrastructure and economy, and the surge of terrorist militias.
Al-Meslet indicated that Russia has blocked all draft resolutions condemning the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons in Syria despite the many UN reports and investigations that proved the regime’s use of chemical weapons more than once.
He pointed out that Russia, through its threat to use its veto power, controls the drafting of the UN resolution on the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need in Syria, stressing that Russia is now using humanitarian issues as bargaining chips.
