The Coordinator of the Foreign Relations Department of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdulahad Astepho, welcomed recent French statements affirming their commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people and implementing UN Resolution 2254. Astepho called on other European Union countries to maintain their positions on Syria, particularly adhering to the “Three No’s” policy: no normalization of relations with the Assad regime, no lifting of sanctions, and no reconstruction, all contingent upon irreversible progress in the political process.
In a press statement, Astepho emphasized that France’s steadfast stance on supporting the Syrian people and addressing the crimes committed in Syria by the regime and its allies significantly contributes to achieving a just and sustainable solution in Syria and the region. He warned that any deviation from this approach would backfire, prolong the suffering of the Syrian people, destabilize the region, and perpetuate the refugee crisis.
Astepho reiterated that a sustainable solution in Syria requires a political solution and the implementation of UN resolutions on Syria, primarily the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254.
During a recent UN Security Council session on the humanitarian and political situation in Syria, France’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Nicolas de Rivière, stated that a credible political process that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people remains the only path to peace. He reaffirmed France’s support for the efforts of UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen and the full implementation of UN Resolution 2254.
