Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Haitham Rahma, called on the US administration to reconsider its policy in Syria, stressing that failing to confront Russia’s actions in Syria has encouraged Putin to launch his aggression against Ukraine today.
Rahma pointed out that what is happening in Ukraine should remind everyone of what is happening in Syria which Putin has destroyed since the start of his military aggression in September 2015.
Rahma stressed that the international community knows very well that the Russian intervention in Syria and the brutal bombardment of Syrian cities and towns caused the largest refugee crisis and worst destruction since World War II.
Moreover, Rahma stressed that the international community is required now more than ever to unify and act urgently in the face of Russian tyranny. He also called for putting an end to Putin’s policy of occupation and destruction that he pursues to suppress the will of the peoples who demand freedom and democracy.
Rahma stressed the need for international cooperation to take urgent, tougher and unified measures to rein in the Russian regime in both Syria and Ukraine. He made it clear that the continued international silence and the failure of international institutions to act towards Russia’s crimes will eventually lead to more crimes, which will pose a serious threat to the region, including in the European Union countries.
Rahma welcomed the proposal submitted by the Ukrainian government calling for Russia to be expelled from the UN Security Council. He said that the SOC has repeatedly stressed that he membership of Russia at the UN Security Council is an obstacle to the international will as Russia impedes all UN Security Council resolutions, especially those calling for the protection and assisting of civilians, as well as respecting human rights.
