The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) welcomed the decision to oust the Iranian regime from the Commission on the Status of Women in response to its barbaric, repressive policies that contradict women’s rights, and the brutality it is showing against the popular uprising taking place in Iran.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the SOC said: “The Iranian regime’s brutal crackdown on the ongoing demonstrators in Iran is inseparable from the crimes that the Iranian militias are committing in Syria as they confront the voices calling for freedom with fire, terrorism and repression.”
The SOC renewed its support for the popular uprising in Iran against the mullahs’ terrorist regime. It called on the international community to prevent this regime and its militias from further interfering in Syrian affairs in favor of the criminal Assad regime, and to take collective international action to achieve the peoples’ aspirations for freedom.
Iran was ousted from the United Nations women’s group on Wednesday for policies contrary to the rights of women and girls after Tehran’s crackdown on protests over the death of a young woman in custody.
The 54-member U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted a U.S.-drafted resolution to “remove with immediate effect the Islamic Republic of Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for the remainder of its 2022-2026 term.”
