The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee held its periodic meeting in the presence of Vice-Presidents Abdel Hakim Bashar and Ruba Habboush, and members of the General Assembly. The committee discussed international issues and the repercussions of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its impact on Syria.
The committee welcomed the UN General Assembly’s adoption of a resolution condemning the Russian aggression against Ukraine. It stressed that the resolution will help achieve justice for the peoples being affected by the crimes of the Russian regime and its allies and tools in Syria, Georgia and others.
The committee stressed that the Assad regime’s vote against the UN resolution confirmed its total bias and affiliation with the evil alliance led by the Russian regime against the Ukrainian people.
Moreover, the committee discussed the latest developments in the region and the international opposition to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It reaffirmed the SOC’s condemnation of the Russian invasion, stressing that the illegitimate Assad regime still holds Syria’s seat at the United Nations and uses to serve its interests and those of Russia.
The committee also stressed the need to work and communicate with the United Nations in order to grant Syria’s seat to its rightful owner, namely the Syrian people. The committee also said that the Assad regime is committing various types of crime and threatens regional and international peace, as is the case of Russia, which today threatens international peace by violating international law and attacking a sovereign state.
The committee voted a decision to adopt September 30 of each year the “Day of Genocide” that the Syrian people were subjected to at the hands of the regime and its allies, especially Russia and Iran. Russia’s direct military aggression against Syria begun on September 30, 2015. The committee agreed to follow up on this decision and communication with the UN to adopt this day as an official day in the UN agenda.
