The Constitutional Working Group, which was formed by decision of President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Nasr Al-Hariri, on Wednesday held its first meeting to discuss issues related to the constitution.
The group is made up of members of the Constitutional Committee, members of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, and members of the SOC’s political committee.
Coordinator of the Group, Riyadh Al-Hassan, said that the Group was formed with the aim of discussing issues that are still up for discussion by the Constitutional Committee. The Group is also tasked with developing proposals for constitutional provisions in preparation for the next round of talks by the Constitutional Committee due to convene in Geneva in early October.
Al-Hassan pointed out that the Group discussed important issues related to the constitutional provisions and will present the results of its work to the political committee during its upcoming meeting due to take place on Thursday. Should these proposals be approved, they will be conveyed to the SOC’s representatives in the Syrian Negotiations Commission and the Constitutional Committee.
He pointed out that despite the Assad regime’s refusal to seriously engage in the work of the Constitutional Committee and its disruption of the political process, the SOC and the Syrian Negotiations Commission remain committed to implementing international decisions on Syria, most importantly UN Resolution 2254.
