A delegation from the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) headed by President Salem Al-Meslet, began a visit to the Arab League in the Egyptian capital, Cairo on Sunday, during which they met the League’s Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki.
The delegation comprised SOC’s Vice-president for foreign relations Abdulahad Astepho, Secretary-General Haitham Rahma, and member of the political committee Badr Jamous.
The two sides discussed ways to revitalize the Arab role in the political process and bring about a political transition in Syria in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012 and the relevant international resolutions, especially resolutions 2118 and 2254.
Al-Meslet said: “We discussed with the League’s Secretary-General the necessity of revitalizing the Arab role in Syria in order to confront the Iranian military and political intervention and its malicious schemes through which the Iranian regime is trying to tear the societal fabric in the region.” He stressed the important status of Syria as a founding member of the Arab League.
Al-Meslet called for greater support by the Arab League and Arab states to the Syrian people and their just demands for freedom and dignity. He stressed the importance of stepping up Arab humanitarian aid in the liberated north of Syria, especially in the areas of healthcare education.
Al-Meslet also stressed the need to maintain the isolation of the criminal Assad regime and refuse to engage in its rehabilitation or its return to the Arab League as it has long lost legitimacy and does not represent Syria or its people. He also stressed the need to press towards achieving political transition.
Moreover, Al-Meslet called for handing Syria’s seat in the Arab League to the SOC as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people. He also called for allowing the SOC to participate in the League’s committees and departments.
For his part, Aboul Gheit welcomed the SOC’s delegation, stressing that a political solution is the only way out of the crisis in Syria and to preserve the unity and independence of Syria.
The Arab League chief reiterated his support for the Syrian people who have been going through unspeakable suffering over the past decade. He also stressed the need to do whatever possible at the current stage in order to put an end to this suffering and restore normal life for the Syrian people in an independent state in which they live with dignity.
