The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Department of Refugee Affairs presented its work report to the General Assembly during the latter’s 60th regular session.
The Department’s Coordinator, Adnan Al-Rahmoun, pointed out that the Department is following the affairs of refugees in the host countries and prepares reports on the major studies and the latest statistics on the numbers of Syrian refugees through the work of the monitoring unit. It is also following the success stories of Syrian refugees in the host countries and the major news and issues related to the legal, social and humanitarian situation of Syrian refugees.
Al-Rahmoun gave an overview on the activities carried out by the Department during the past two months. He talked about the meetings he held with the Directorate General of Migration Management as well as organizations and associations in Turkey in order to address the issues of the Syrians.
Moreover, Al-Rahmoun indicated that the Department participated in a workshop that was held under the title “Transitional Justice in the Syrian Context: Reality vs Application” at the headquarters of the Stabilization Support Unit in the town of Afrin in rural Aleppo.
He also pointed out that the Department worked on following up on the situation of the IDPs and refugees, as it conducted a field tour on the IDPs associations and gatherings, such as the Association of the Displaced of People of Aleppo, the Association of the Palestinian-Syrians and the Displaced from Rural Damascus.
Al-Rahmon recommended sending letters to the United Nations and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to emphasize the rights of Syrian refugees in international laws and norms, stressing the importance of protecting refugees from practices seeking to force them to return.
