The Coordinator of the Office of Refugee Affairs in the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salim Idris, presented a work report covering the past two months. In the report, he discussed the conditions of Syrian refugees in Iraq, Lebanon, Türkiye, and various other countries. Additionally, he provided an overview of refugee-related issues in these countries and highlighted the efforts made by the Office to monitor their well-being.
Idris also addressed the recent actions of the Iraqi government, which deported Syrian refugees and handed them over to the Assad regime, expressing concerns about Iraq’s lack of commitment to international laws. He mentioned a letter sent to the ambassadors of regional and Western countries, calling out Iraq’s violations and holding it accountable for its treatment of refugees handed over to the Assad regime.
Furthermore, Idris touched upon the actions of Greek authorities against individuals fleeing peril in their home countries, including Syrians. Specifically, he mentioned Syrian asylum seekers, totaling 70 people, including 32 children and 10 women.
The report highlighted the insufficient humanitarian aid support provided to Syrian refugees in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, raising concerns about the potential abandonment of responsibilities by international organizations more than twelve years into the Syrian conflict.
Lastly, the report followed the journeys of distinguished Syrians who found refuge abroad, such as a Syrian refugee in Canada who created a new platform to search for missing Syrians. It also acknowledged a Syrian journalist who received the “IVLP” award as part of the International Visitor Influencers Program by the US Department of State.
