Abdul Majeed Barakat, the Coordinator of the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Office of Syndicates and Unions and Secretary of the political committee, presented a work report on the activities of the Office to the General Assembly during its 68th session.
In the report, Barakat focused on the most prominent activities of the office over the past two years since its establishment. It has significantly contributed to resolving issues related to unions and federations, particularly in the realm of free Syrian sports. This was achieved by forming the Sports and Youth Commission as one of the branches of the Syrian Interim Government, overseeing its operations, attending its meetings, and preparing for the establishment of sports federations once executive committees are formed. The Commission has also organized numerous sports tournaments.
Barakat pointed out that the Office has been closely monitoring the formation of unions, founding conferences, and regular meetings. Additionally, it has been actively involved in overseeing the activities of student unions, with a particular focus on the establishment of the Free Students of Syria Union. Furthermore, the Office has been diligent in monitoring the activities of youth associations by actively participating in their events and meetings. Barakat emphasized that this continuous monitoring and engagement have strengthened coordination among the SOC, associations, federations, and unions. This has played a crucial role in enhancing institutional work, ultimately raising awareness among the public about the significance of institutional work and the importance of organizing civil society activities.
