The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Office of Syrian Communities Abroad held an online event on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Syrian revolution under the title “Revolutionary messages from the Syrian communities on the tenth anniversary of the revolution” at the SOC’s office in the town of Azaz in rural Aleppo.
The event brought together Coordinator of the Office Muhammad Yahya Maktabi, the SOC’s representative in Washington Qutaiba Idilbi, the SOC’s representative to the United Nations Maryam Shalabi, the SOC’s representative in Germany Fadel al-Rifai, the SOC’s representative in Belgium Bashar Hajj Ali, the SOC’s representative in France Noureddine al-Labad, and the SOC’s representative in Britain Bahiya Mardini.
Participants also included Head of the Syrian community in Kuwait Muhammad al-Hariri, Head of the Syrian community in Romania, Imad Qassas, Head of the Syrian community in Saudi Arabia Jamil Daghestani, Head of the Syrian community in Canada Subhi al-Hammoud, Deputy Head of the Syrian community in Italy Hakam Effendi, Representatives of the Syrian community in Denmark Ismael Hamdo and Muhammad Bertawi, Head of the Syrian community in Gaziantep Mustafa al-Hussein, and Head of the Syrian community in Hatay Muhannad Khattab.
Participants stressed the importance of the tenth anniversary of the Syrian revolution in revitalizing the revolutionary spirit amongst the Syrian people around the world. They also stressed need to set the revolution’s anniversary as a national holiday after its liberation from the murderous Assad regime. They also talked about the role of communities in communicating with decision-makers in the host countries to support the Syrian people’s demands.
Participants put forth numerous valuable, constructive ideas and suggestions, including the taking of lessons from the revolutionary experiences in other countries, such as the revolution that overthrew Ceausescu in Romania. They also included making preparation for the post-Assad stage and strengthening communication and continuous work between the Syrian communities around the world and the SOC as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
Moreover, participants stressed the need to pay attention to the issue of detainees in the Assad regime’s prisons, noting that the tasks and responsibilities placed on the SOC are immense in comparison to its limited resources and capabilities. They also underscored the importance of coordination between the SOC and the Syrian communities so as to support the Syrian revolution and convey its true picture to the peoples around the world.
