The Political Committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) held its regular meeting on Wednesday, chaired by President Salem Al-Meslet, to discuss the recent rush of Arab countries to normalize relations with the Assad regime. The attendees praised the United States’ rejection of efforts to rehabilitate Bashar al-Assad.
During the meeting, attendees discussed the current political situation, specifically the recent visits of officials from various Arab countries to the regime, as well as the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry’s visit and meeting with Bashar Al-Assad. The committee stressed the need for communication with friendly countries to prevent the regime from taking advantage of the earthquake to rehabilitate itself and circumvent Western resolutions.
The attendees commended the role played by the United States and its recent resolution opposing normalization with the Assad regime. They also emphasized the importance of continuing to impose sanctions on the regime and establishing a mechanism to monitor aid to ensure it reaches those in need.
In addition, President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Badr Jamous, briefed the committee on a special event held in cooperation with the Civil Defense and the Stabilization Support Unit to assess the needs of the population in northwestern Syria following the devastating earthquake that struck Syria and Türkiye on February 6.
The committee also reviewed and evaluated the SOC’s response and efforts to address the earthquake damage, while also praising the Syrian National Army for their contributions during the disaster.
