The political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) convened its regular meeting on Thursday, focusing on the outcomes of recent engagements in liberated areas with Syrian activists and reviewing reports from various working groups within the SOC.
Hadi Al-Bahra, President of the SOC, commenced the meeting by providing a comprehensive briefing. Key points included the follow-up on recent meetings in northern Syria, discussions with the Syrian Businessmen Forum regarding ongoing and future projects in liberated areas, and preparations for participation in the Doha Forum.
Badr Jamous, President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, presented an overview of the commission’s recent meetings in Brussels and Geneva. He emphasized the importance of revitalizing the political process in accordance with UN Resolution 2254, urging a Security Council meeting in response to the continued refusal of the Assad regime to implement UN resolutions.
The political committee also deliberated on the final statement from the recent Gulf Summit in Doha. They welcomed the affirmation of Gulf states’ commitment to a political solution in Syria based on UN Resolution 2254, unity of Syrian lands, and respect for Syria’s independence and sovereignty.
SOC’s Vice President, Abdul Majeed Barakat, highlighted recent activities, including overseeing the Gaza Football Championship held in northern Syria as a tribute to Gaza’s victims. He also discussed efforts to strengthen ties between the Sports and Youth Commission and the local council in Al-Bab, along with meetings with the European Union delegation to Syria.
Vice President Dima Moussa shared insights from her participation in a symposium by the human rights organization Free Without Chains, focusing on supporting female survivors from Assad regime detention centers. She emphasized women’s participation in the public sphere to address violence and detention’s impact on women, mentioning a recent meeting with the US Agency for International Development.
Vice President Abdul Hakim Bashar detailed seminars held in Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, his visits to Syrian refugee camps, and meetings with camp residents to assess their pressing needs.
Abdulbasit Abdullatif, Secretary of the political committee, reported on PYD terrorist militia violations in Syria, including civilian murders. He highlighted the local tribe’s response in Manbij, declaring a general mobilization and strike in protest of PYD militia arrest campaigns targeting forced conscription.
Various working groups, including Al Jazira and Euphrates, Interfaith, Refugees and Displaced Persons, Social Forces and Activities, and Syrian Communities, provided detailed reports on their recent work to the political committee.
