The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee held a periodic meeting under the chairmanship of President Salem Al-Meslet to discuss the latest field and political developments in Syria. In attendance was also President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission (SNC) Anas Abdah.
Al-Meslet welcomed General Coordinator of the National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change, Hassan Abdel Azim, as a guest in the meeting. He gave an overview on the meetings that he held last week with officials from the US State Department and Italian foreign ministry. He stressed the need to warn all countries of the dangers of normalization of ties with the Assad regime or trying to rehabilitate it.
Al-Meslet praised the efforts that sisterly Arab states, especially the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, are making to prevent the Assad regime from returning to the Arab League. He stressed that the return of the regime means bringing Iran into the Arab League.
Participants discussed the implications of the Assad regime’s decision to abrogate the post of the republic’s Grand Mufti. They warned that the move will have serious consequences for Syria’s cultural and historical identity as it will consolidate demographic change and strengthen Iranian influence over Syrian society. The SOC set up a committee to follow the issue and communicate with the Syrian Islamic Council and revolutionary institutions.
Participants discussed with Abdel Azim the outcomes of the SOC’s meetings with the National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change. They agreed to issue a joint statement on the results of these discussions.
