President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, presented a briefing and a report on the presidency’s work to the General Assembly at its 61st regular session. He gave an overview on the activities and results of the local and international meetings he held in the past two months.
Al-Meslet talked about the results of his visits to the liberated areas, his participation in the commemoration of the eleventh anniversary of the Syrian Revolution, the meetings with various revolutionary bodies, commanders of the Syrian National Army and the free police force, and leadership of administrative and service institutions.
Al-Meslet stressed the importance of further strengthening the SOC’s work in the liberated areas and enhancing its presence in the local civil, military and political bodies. He also stressed the importance of developing the presence of executive institutions at the level of the Syrian Interim Government, the Assistance Coordination Unit, and the Syria Recovery Trust Fund.
Al-Meslet also talked about the results of the meetings that the SOC held with foreign ambassadors and missions, the Arab League, and its participation in the Doha Forum. He stressed the need to revitalize the political process and reach a political transition that fulfills the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom, dignity and democracy.
Furthermore, Al-Meslet pointed out that the SOC focuses on strengthening international communication and interaction with the major players in Syria. He stressed the importance of engaging with all available international bodies such as the United Nations and the UN Security Council in order to reach a political transition in line with UN resolution 2254. He also stressed the need to utilize every opportunity to reach a solution that satisfies the Syrian people and fulfills their hopes and aspirations.
Al-Meslet talked about the SOC’s political activities in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, stressing that the Assad regime has become a partner with Russia in the crimes it is committing against the Ukrainian people. He pointed out that everyone has become aware that Bashar al-Assad has turned into a puppet of Putin, which represents a threat to international peace and security.
Al-Meslet also stressed that the SOC continues its efforts to ensure the release of detainees and disclose the fate of the forcibly disappeared as well as document the Assad regime’s human rights violations.
