At the invitation of Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, held a consultative meeting with Mr. Çavuşoğlu at Turkish Foreign Ministry in Ankara. The two sides discussed the latest developments on the ground and in the political process in accordance with the framework of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
In attendance were also President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission Badr Jamous and Head of the Syrian Interim Government Abdurrahman Mustafa.
Al-Meslet reaffirmed the SOC’s keenness on putting an end to the suffering of the Syrian people by reaching a genuine political solution in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN resolutions on Syria, most importantly UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254.
Al-Meslet pointed out that the SOC and the forces of the Syrian Revolution and opposition have already made tremendous efforts and dealt positively with all international initiatives to reach a political solution that would save the lives of the Syrian people, but were met with intransigence and rejection from the Assad regime which still insists on pursuing a bloody military solution.
Al-Meslet stressed that the bloody attack that the Assad regime and terrorist militias carried out against the town of al-Bab on Friday exposed the true nature of this regime, its structure and terrorist links. The attack also showed that the Assad regime cannot be re-legitimized or rehabilitated despite the tireless efforts of its enablers, he added.
Moreover, Al-Meslet spoke about the tour he has recently made in the liberated areas where he met with local dignitaries, representatives of unions, groupings, and associations. He conveyed to the Turkish top diplomat the Syrian people’s demands and messages.
Al-Meslet stressed the depth of the relationship with Turkey, expressing his full appreciation for its great role in defending the Syrian people’s cause by providing support to the Syrian people on the ground and in international forums alike.
For his part, Mr. Çavuşoğlu reaffirmed his country’s support for the Syrian people’s cause and for reaching a political solution in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and other relevant UN resolutions.
