President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem al-Meslet, met with Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay in the Turkish capital, Ankara to discuss with him the latest field and political developments in Syria.
In attendance were also Head of the Syrian Interim Government (SIG) Abdurrahman Mustafa, and President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission Anas Abdah.
Al-Meslet stressed the importance of the efforts that the friendly and sisterly states, especially Türkiye, are making to advance the political solution and support a genuine political transition in Syria.
Participants discussed the course of the political process which has stalled due to the Assad regime’s intransigence, refusal to accept any political solution, and its insistence on pursuing a military solution. They stressed the need for the political solution to be in line with UN Resolution 2254 with all its provisions, especially the establishment of a Transitional Governing Body. They also reaffirmed their rejection of attempts to derail the political process through a new proposal that contradicts UN resolution 2254.
Al-Meslet talked about the situation in the liberated areas, stressing the need to step up support for SIG and further empower it to better manage those areas.
Moreover, participants discussed the conditions that the IDPs are going through in these harsh winter conditions, especially following the latest snowstorm that hit the region. They stressed the need to improve the conditions in the IDPs cams and support the efforts to help residents of these camps move to temporary housing units until a political solution is reached and the safe, dignified return to their homes is guaranteed.
The two sides also discussed the situation of Syrian refugees in Türkiye, stressing the continuation of the provisions of facilitations to Syrian refugees and the addressing of their outstanding problems. They also pointed to the continuation of the measures to help Syrian students continue their study in Turkish universities.
For his part, Mr Oktay reaffirmed Türkiye’s continued support for the Syrian people and their just cause and demands, stressing the persistence of the Turkish position with regard to terrorist organizations and the need to preserve Syria’s unity.
