President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Nasr Al-Hariri, sent a letter of appreciation to the UK Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, and the UK Minister of State for Middle East and North Africa, James Cleverly, for their honorable stances in support of the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom and dignity.
Al-Hariri commended the commitment shown by the British Government to hold those responsible for crimes in Syria accountable, stressing the importance of the United Kingdom’s decision to move the European Union sanctions against the Assad regime and its partners to the independent British sanctions system for Syria.
“We express our full support for the British efforts to redress the victims, prevent impunity and put an end to the crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and the horrific human rights violations committed by the Assad regime against the Syrian people.”
He added: “We also express our full readiness to cooperate with the legal teams of the British Government in order to exchange information, follow up on the implementation of penal laws and hold criminals accountable.”
“We are looking forward to increasing diplomatic and economic pressure on the Assad regime, and to the use of sanctions to prevent targeted people associated with the Syrian regime, especially Asma al-Assad and her family, who hold British citizenship, from entering the United Kingdom, and from taking advantage of British banks, or benefiting from the British economy in one way or another.”
Al-Hariri called for holding the Assad family accountable, and for the seizure of their movable and immovable property for the favor of the Syrian people in order to stop funding a regime that commits war crimes against its own people and brutally represses civilians.
He stressed the importance of taking actual steps to achieve a complete and real political transition, in accordance with the Geneva Communiqué, Security Council Resolutions 2118 and 2254 and United Nations General Assembly Resolution 67/262 to reach a comprehensive political solution that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people.
