President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem al-Meslet, sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, in which he stressed the important role of the Arab League in reaching a political solution and ending the suffering of the Syrian people.
Al-Meslet thanked the Arab League for its firm stances towards the cause of the Syrian people and for its continued support for them. He said that the convening of the Arab Summit in Algeria is an opportunity to achieve progress in Syria by supporting a political transition in accordance with UN resolutions, in a way that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people who are still yearning to regain their freedom and rights with the serious support from their Arab brothers.
Al-Meslet stressed the need for the Arab brothers to adopt a firm stance to end the tragedy in Syria; achieve a political transition in accordance with UN Resolution 2254; contribute to achieving accountability; and help restore the pivotal role of Syria in the Arab fold.
He also stressed the importance of the political and diplomatic role of the Arab League that is capable of contributing to a solution in Syria and pushing the international and Arab communities towards implementing UN Security Council resolutions.
Moreover, Al-Meslet stressed the importance of the Arab role in confronting the growing Iranian military and political influence and the malicious project through which the Iranian regime is trying to tear the social fabric of Syria and the region.
He also stressed the need for the Arab countries to maintain the isolation of the Assad regime and refuse to engage in its legitimization, rehabilitation or acceptance in the Arab League as it lacks legitimacy and does not represent Syria or its people.
He also made it clear that the Assad regime has become a tool in the hands of Iran and an enabler for its malicious project that threatens sisterly states.
He added: “Indeed, the Assad regime is serving Tehran’s expansionist ambitions and subversive acts which Iran is carrying out through its terrorist, sectarian militias that it deploys in many Arab countries with the aim of undermining their security and stability. Therefore, anu suggestions for returning the Assad regime to the Arab League at any time means granting Iran a seat in this league.”
Al-Meslet stressed that the SOC stands ready to cooperate with all international, international and Arab efforts, especially the Arab League in a way that pushes the political process in Syria forward and in order to take decisions that serve the cause of the Syrian people, Arab and regional issues.
He stressed that a political transition is the only way to stop the suffering of the Syrian people and ensure the territorial integrity and independence of Syria. (Source: SOC’s media department)
