The Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, Haytham Rahmeh, has criticized the Sultanate of Oman for receiving the war criminal Bashar al-Assad, calling it an insult to the millions of Syrians who suffered under his regime. According to Rahmeh, the Assad regime is responsible for using chemical weapons, barrel bombs, and committing thousands of crimes against humanity.
Rahmeh believes that the Assad regime is merely a tool in the hands of Russia and Iran, and its interests do not represent the Syrian people. Normalization of relations with the regime, he argues, will not change its criminal reality or erase its track record of atrocities.
Rahmeh called on the international community, especially major actors in Syria, to shoulder their responsibility and not turn a blind eye to those who have killed, maimed, and displaced millions of Syrians.
Rahmeh also criticized American and European efforts to ease the sanctions imposed on the regime, using the humanitarian aid following the earthquake as an example. He believes that such actions pave the way for calls for normalization of relations with the criminal Assad regime.
Rahmeh called on the Sultanate of Oman and any country considering extending a helping hand to the regime to stop its political support and all forms of aid that only lead to more killings, displacement, detention, and torture.
In conclusion, Rahmeh stressed that restoring Syria’s effective role at the Arab and regional level is not achieved through normalization of relations with a war criminal, but by fulfilling the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom and supporting the political transition in Syria in accordance with UN resolutions.
