On Tuesday, dozens of residents in the city of As-Suwayda continued their sit-in protest in Al-Sir (also known as Al-Karama) Square, calling for the restoration of their basic rights, the redistribution of national wealth, political change, and the implementation of UN resolutions on Syria.
Protesters held banners criticizing Bashar al-Assad’s recent speech, which did not mention the province of Idlib, an area most affected by the earthquake. They compared his statement to that of his father Hafez al-Assad, the former Minister of Defense, who declared the fall of Quneitra province to the Israeli occupation in 1967.
Both men and women participated in the sit-in, emphasizing their rejection of any attempts to divide Syrians and reiterating that Idlib is an integral part of Syria.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition showed its support for the anti-regime protests in Suwayda, placing blame on the regime for the worsening situation in the province and throughout Syria.
